Chantelle Tom-Ying

Biography

Chantelle Tom-Ying is a classical saxophonist and teacher from Toronto. A University of Toronto classical saxophone performance graduate, she is finishing her next degree in life sciences. She began her musical training on piano at the age of six before switching to saxophone in university, studying under Professor Wallace Halladay. Praised for her expressive quality, Chantelle has won First Place at the 2025 Rouge River Winds solo competition, International Music Festival Competition woodwinds category, Ontario Musical Festivals Association classical reed provincials, and an honourable mention at the University of Toronto Winds Concerto Competition. She performs with notable professional ensembles including the Toronto Pops Orchestra, Toronto Saxophone Collective, and Skule Orchestra. Chantelle made her soloist debut with the Rouge River Winds performing the Sonate en Ut# by the French woman composer, Fernande Decruck. In November 2026, she will perform a concerto with the University of Toronto Wind Ensemble at the MacMillan Theatre. As an educator, her pedagogical approach has led students to win scholarships to the University of Toronto performance program, and principal positions with the Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra and Ontario Provincial Honour Band. Chantelle has studied and performed internationally in France, Taiwan, and The Netherlands with esteemed saxophonists such as Claude Delangle of the Paris Conservatory.
