Yuzi Sun

Biography

Yuzi Sun is a Toronto-based jazz drummer and multi-instrumentalist whose musical journey spans classical, rock, pop, and jazz. She began studying piano at a young age and performed as a keyboardist with her local Youth Symphony Orchestra. Influenced by classical music, Chinese folk traditions, and popular music, she developed a diverse musical foundation that continues to inform her artistic voice. Yuzi began playing drums in her early teens, developing a strong passion for rock and pop. During high school and her bachelor’s degree in Radio & Television in China, she performed with various rock bands at local music festivals. While completing her master’s degree in Professional Education at Western University, she joined the Western Mustang Band drumline, performing at university and community sporting events. Through her exposure to North American music during this period, she discovered a deep interest in jazz. In 2021, Yuzi began formal jazz studies at Mohawk College, where she developed a strong foundation in jazz performance and musicianship. She later continued her studies at the University of Toronto, pursuing her goal of becoming a professional musician. Inspired by artists such as Elvin Jones, Gary Novak, and Larnell Lewis, Yuzi strives to create a distinctive musical voice that reflects both her diverse musical experiences and rich cultural background.
